It might look like a medieval torture device, or a the latest kitchen gadget, but this weird but wonderful thing is possibly the world's best scalp massager. I received mine as part of a Favorite Things Christmas exchange, and it has quickly become one of my Favorite Things, too! Just raise and lower the massager over your head and the wire fingers glide easily over your scalp, giving you a nice tingling sensation and reducing stress. I like to keep mine in my office close to my computer for a quick pick-me-up. Weird? Maybe. But, oh so wonderful!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-82607189987479771042014-03-07T16:03:00.002-05:002014-03-07T16:03:35.376-05:00Chimi-What?!?

Chimichurri! I was originally introduced to this flavorful condiment while visiting Argentina several years ago. Recently, over the last year or so, I have seen it popping up on American menus and in the market. It is a sauce for grilled meat made from finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano, and red wine vinegar, often with a touch of red pepper, basil or paprika. While delicious on grilled steak, we also like it for a dipping sauce for crusty bread or crispy fries or oven baked potato wedges. You can make you own, or look for bottled Chimichurri sauce or packets of dehydrated mix that you add to oil and vinegar. Delicioso!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-52808220916180228342014-02-24T17:33:00.000-05:002014-02-24T17:33:00.263-05:00Worth the Hunt

More than once I've stood in the Walgreen aisle, reading the small print on little tubes of lip balm looking for one with a SPF higher than 8 or even 15. When I see this one, I like to snatch up a couple of them... one for each coat pocket, one for the tennis bag, one for my purse, one for my desk. The Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen Lip Balm has a very high SPF of 50 and is very water and sweat resistant. It goes on clear, is very moisturizing, and has a pleasant flavor (flavor? maybe I should say scent?). If you can't find it by the lip balms, check the sunscreen section - it's worth the hunt!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-81944553334667010602014-02-18T17:21:00.000-05:002014-02-18T17:21:00.350-05:00Smart Skin Care

Having had a few issues with my skin, I am trying to be more diligent with daily sunscreen use. This is my go-to favorite right now ~ Aveeno Smart Essential Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. I like the consistency, not to light, not to thick and I love the SPF 30. The product claims to "harness the power of antioxidant Southernwood extract". I'm guessing the way they brag about it that it's a good thing... all I know is that I like the way it feels, I like the way it smells, I like the SPF 30, and I like the price. Bam!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-80585125102469350472014-02-12T11:10:00.000-05:002014-02-12T11:10:00.653-05:00Convenience in a Cube

Have you tried this yet? Small frozen cubes of ready to use herbs and seasonings! What a great way to keep ginger, garlic and fresh herbs on hand to use in your favorite recipes. While I usually have garlic cloves on hand, this saves time and mess by having it already crushed. Ginger, however, can be a problem as I don't always use it all up before it goes bad and then have to pitch it, and fresh herbs are, of course, expensive in the winter. Solve the problem by keeping a package of these in your freezer and pop out a square when you need it. For the garlic, 1 cube is equal to 1 clove, for the ginger and herbs, 1 cube is equal to 1 teaspoon. I've used both brands, Dorat and Pop & Cook, both bought locally at either WalMart, Target or Kroger (sorry I can't remember which brand came from which store). You can find them in the freezer section, but you have to search a little, usually near the frozen vegetables.

This little pearl has been in my suitcase for years, but I had forgotten what a special pearl it was until Vicki gifted all of us in the tennis group with one at Christmas! It's the Omnisax by Envirosax. This strong but lightweight bag rolls up into itself and snaps tight to take up very little space and add very little weight to your purse or suitcase. Then when you need it, at the beach, the Farmer's Market, or the grocery store, just unsnap it, shake it out, and you are good to go. So while I still keep my original in my suitcase for using at the beach or treasure hunting on vacation, I am thrilled to have another to stash in my car for impromptu market stops.

It has been a LONG winter… and it's only January! So last week I was prowling the produce section of the grocery store, seeking out some tastes of summer. Craving a fresh tomato, and especially fresh salsa, I picked up a tub of Garden Fresh Gourmet salsa in Jack's Special (mild). Perfect! The Mild flavor allowed the pure taste of the tomatoes to shine. Just a touch of lime juice tops off the mix of finely chopped tomatoes, onions, green pepper, cilantro and just a touch of jalapeño. Look for this in the produce section of your local market.

This is one of my favorite things, but even better, it is one of my daughter's favorite things and there is one not far from where she lives and she does a lot of gift shopping there! Ten Thousand Villages is a fair trade retailer, originally part of the Mennonite Central Committee, but since 2000 has been incorporated as an in depended nonprofit, charitable organization. Today a global network of social entrepreneurs works to empower artisans in developing countries. Ten Thousand Villages works with designers to create items that are beautiful, useful, and stylish. You will find unique, hand-crafted items for your home, your self, and lots of great gifts, such as jewelry, pillows, scarves, table wear, mirrors and vases, and many more items. Below are just a few of the items that I have been luck to receive! It's a neat place because you are doing good and finding something special, and buying it because you want to, not just because you think you should to be charitable.

On those dark, cold, dreary mornings when I drag myself out of bed, scarf down a grapefruit and some Corn Chex, or Lucky Charms (one of my guilty pleasures), then get dressed to head to the gym, nothing lifts my mood like these colorful shoes. They are the ASICS Gel-Noosa Tri 8 and they are a absolute riot of color and pattern. One look and you can't help but smile. As an added bonus, they go with everything! Purple, yellow, pink, blue, orange, these shoes have them all. And because they are ASICS, they have good stability and support, perfect for all those lunges, squats, curls, and crunches. I can't really justify another pair, but they also come in several other color combinations and I am lusting after the lime/blue/confetti pair! Whew! It has been an unbelievable fall into winter. It started with a move to a new Host Church for our BSF class (I'm the Class Administrator, so this is kind of a big deal). Just as we got settled, severe winds and tornadoes came thru our area, severely damaging two locals schools. Our host church invited the public schools to use their building, thus displacing our BSF class. We searched desperately for a new host church to hold our class of 530+ women and 170 children. Two weeks later, we started up our class again in a new host church, which is an answer to prayer, but also a bunch of work. To top that, we had a long term class member dealing with serious mental health issues and threatening her group leader, my staff was all on guard, and on edge. I was so ready to go on Christmas break! But things did not slow down… The Monday before Christmas, we learned that our youngest son was invited to Tampa to the Kohl's Kicking Underclassmen Challenge, so we quickly scheduled a last minute trip to Florida. It would have been a nice little vacation, if I hadn't woken up the day we arrived with one of the worst colds of my life, and then lost my voice for four days. Our return was complicated by the Polar Vortex storm, which canceled our return flight, and after several reschedules, we ended up driving home instead. Anyway, all of this is to say, that's my excuse for slacking the last few weeks, but I'm back and I hope you will keep checking back to read about my latest pearl.Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-11211478972668155822013-11-06T15:56:00.000-05:002013-11-06T15:56:00.172-05:00Graeter's is Great!

Graeter's is great! But Graeter's in a pretzel cone is pure awesomeness! Delicious creamy ice cream filled with rich, soft chocolate chunks in a crunchy, salty pretzel cone! My most recent favorite flavor is the Chocolate with Coconut, Almond and Chocolate. All my favorite snack tastes - crunchy, salty, creamy, nutty and chocolate - in one amazing bite.
Graeter's stores are found in major cities in Ohio and Kentucky, but Graeter's ice cream can be found in the freezer section of many local groceries. As for the pretzel cones, you can order them from Amazon, and I will be watching for them in our local stores.

For a quick, delicious, and "nice" dinner, try one of the Hormel Always Tender Pork Tenderloins. Available in the original unseasoned flavor, and several other pre-marinated flavors including Teriyaki (our current favorite), Lemon Garlic, and Mesquite Barbecue So easy to make, just bake them in the oven for about 30-35 min, slice and serve. Just as the label says, they are always tender. We just enjoyed one last night with a baked butternut squash and Asian-style slaw. A simple but "nice" dinner.

Out and about and late for lunch? Got the 4pm munchies and looking for something to hold you over until dinner? Pick up a Kind bar! Claudette first introduced me to the Dark Chocolate Nuts and Sea Salt .... mmmmm! Then I picked up a box this summer at Sam's Club - Peanutbutter Chocolate and possibly my favorite flavor, Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew. Last week at Target I tried a box of the Coconut Almond flavor and that is running a very close second. Around 200 calories a bar, and full of crunchy nuts, they are a delicious and satisfying snack!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-17988497534934473572013-10-16T15:09:00.000-04:002013-10-16T15:09:00.101-04:00Sugar and Spice and Pumpkin is Nice!

This is one of my favorite fall recipes ~ Pumpkin Cake. Easy to make and lightly spiced, topped with just a dusting of powdered sugar. Originally a Pampered Chef muffin recipe, I prefer to make it in a Bundt pan and serve it for dessert.

Pumpkin Bundt Cake

1 pkg Yellow Cake Mix

2 tsp Cinnamon

1 tsp Baking Soda

1 can (15oz) Pumpkin

3 Eggs

1/2 c Oil

Preheat oven to 350. Blend together all ingredients. Pour into greased and floured Bundt pan. Bake 45-50 min or until done. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar. You can top with cream cheese frosting, but we prefer it plain and simple.

The "All Shirred Up" top from Zella is my new go-to favorite. I am wearing it as I type, with my red jeans and a white tank, ready to go cheer on the Red Devils tonight. Last week, I topped it over a pale yellow tank and black yoga pants for an early morning flight to Florida. A few days before that, I pulled it on over a work-out T and capri's after my (very first!) Zumba class to meet with my accountability group. It's cozy, comfortable, and very wearable. The sweater-knit top has sleeves nice and long sleeves with ruching at the cuffs, and a soft cowl-style collar with a loose hoody. The back features shirring from top to bottom. Besides the versatile gray, it is also available in white and teal. Although it's one of those high-tech, quick-dry fabrics, it looks and feels like a light weight sweater. Another Pearl from Zella!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-59963804623364142572013-10-04T14:53:00.000-04:002013-10-04T14:53:00.952-04:00Whip It, Whip it Good!

Like peanut butter but want to cut back a little on the fat and calories? Like peanut butter but hate it when your apple slice or carrot breaks off stuck in the jar? Then look for Jif Whips in the peanut butter section. It's peanut butter, whipped! Regular peanut butter, with no unpronounceable ingredients, in a soft and spreadable form. Perfect for dipping in apple slices, carrot sticks, or topping a banana, and just as good in an old-fashioned PB&J as old fashioned peanut butter, but with just 140 calories per serving (2 Tablespoons). Rumor has it there is also a peanut butter-chocolate flavor that I can not wait to try!Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-87419793032568579882013-07-15T14:12:00.004-04:002013-07-15T14:12:31.475-04:00A Favorite T

Maybe this isn't too exciting... another t-shirt. But sometimes it can be challenging to find a good stand-alone Tee sometimes. Something that is flattering (v-neck, side shirring), holds up well to repeated washes, reasonable price, variety of colors. This Caslon Shirred V-neck Tee from Nordstroms fits the bill. Available in solids and stripes. This tiny sterling silver necklace says it all... Carpe Diem! YOLO seems to be the trendy saying lately... but Carpe Diem is a more classic and classical version, and a good reminder for me to make the most of each day. And this tiny, hand cut, little square necklace designed by Lisa Hopkins has become my signature piece this summer as I try to make every day count. I found this at Gretel's in West Lafayette, but Lisa also has an Etsy site for your convenience. Etsy - Lisa HopkinsMartihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-81620709128792252712013-06-24T08:59:00.000-04:002013-06-24T08:59:00.989-04:00Eatin' on Ito

It was time, actually way past time, to update our everyday dishes. The Corelle pattern we had served us well for over 10, maybe 15 years, and possibly two moves. Though the pieces were still in very good condition, they no longer matched our taste or style... and hadn't for quite some time. So over the last few years I have been looking and shopping for just the right thing - and I found it in the Ito pattern by Crate & Barrel. But I hesitated, a long time, because it wasn't sturdy, common Corelle, but actually china! Really, china for everyday! How frivolous! But I checked it out carefully, over and over again, anytime I was within a mile or two of a Crate & Barrel. It was lightweight, almost as light as Corelle, and sturdy, not a delicate fine china. And most importantly, I loved the pattern and style. So when C & B had their Memorial Day sale, I went for it, and I'm so happy with my decision. It looks great in our kitchen and especially against our black kitchen table. I added some cereal bowls in white from the Madison pattern, also at C & B, and we are set. I found these just-right-for-lunch-for-two-size bags of salad mix from Taylor Farms at Sam's Club a couple of weeks ago. We tried the Southwest flavor, a mix of lettuce, cabbage and cilantro, and topped it with the included bag of pumpkin seeds and tortilla strips, along with a hard boiled egg, handful of cheese and some red pepper strips from the fridge. Tossed it all with the Creamy Cilantro Dressing packet and a quick and healthy lunch was ready in minutes.Martihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12667308523316945492noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26040327986306805.post-77900947165451829892013-06-14T08:31:00.000-04:002013-06-14T08:31:00.711-04:00Cuckoo for Coconut, again!

But this time it's edible! Don't miss these tasty little bag of Trader Joe's Roasted Coconut Chips the next time your at TJ's. These "chips" are not like a chocolate chip, but more like large shavings. Crunchy dry roasted coconut with a touch of salt and sugar. Addictive! It would be way too easy to devour the bag in one sitting, instead I've been saving it for a salad topper with some fresh pineapple or few orange sections and maybe some honey roasted almonds, but would be so yummy topping a hot fudge sundae. Another summer salad option.... I love peaches so I couldn't resist trying the Peach Vanilla Dressing from Braswell's found on a shelf at my favorite meat market (D & R Market for the local readers). A delicious and fresh tasting salad dressing, with only 15 calories per 2 Tablespoons. Made from fresh peaches, and real ingredients like a poppy seeds, cider vinegar and a touch of honey, and comes in a reusable carafe. For a quick and healthy meal, our latest go-to is Flatbreads using the Flatout Traditional Flatbreads. Put the flatbread on a cookie sheet and pop it in the oven at 375 for about 4 minutes. While that is crisping up, chop up your favorite toppings. Use your favorite veggies, or the odds and ends lurking in the fridge. Pull out the flatbread, cover with a handful of shredded mozzarella, the chopped up veggies, and stick it back in the oven for about 7-8 minutes. Set the table, toss and salad, and dinner is ready.

Made a quick stop at Nordstroms last week and easily walked by this top, maybe even two or three times, but the texture and seaming caught my eye, so I added to my dressing room. So happy I did - this cute little top, the Exposed Seam Top by Olivia Moon, is very cute and very comfortable, and a reasonable $39. Its a bit slouchy, but not too slouchy, and a bit sheer, but not too sheer. This model shows it over a white cami, which is ok, but it was a bit warm today so I opted to wear it with a dark bra thought it looked very fresh with white skimmer jeans and my silver sandals for a couple of afternoon appointments. Also available in a very pretty aqua, and a very faded red. I have been stalking this little gadget... It was announced a couple of months ago, but has been backordered from the manufacturer and retailers for weeks! Finally, last week while on my Target run, I stopped by the electronics department and asked about it on a whim .... it was my lucky day! They had two in stock, still in the back room, but the sales associate was very helpful and tracked it down for me... and now I am the happy owner of a Fit Bit Flex! The Flex is a small electronic device that fits in the bracelet to track your exercise and sleep patterns, the uploads them wirelessly to my iPhone app and FitBit website to track and monitor your progress. The Flex also syncs it to popular fitness apps such as Lose It!, My Fitness Pal, and Spark People, and you can use it to track your weight and water, too. The Flex comes in black or slate gray, and you can order a set of additional color bands and swap out the device to match your wardrobe.
